Q. Do I need to create an account to watch videos at VocalistOnline.com ?
A. No registration is currently required to view the public videos, but this is only available during our testing stages and eventually only registered members will be able to view the content. The site also contains protected and private content which to view will require registration and application to the relevant group and/or invitation by the group creator or owner of the video.
Q. How much does it cost to join?
A. Registration for a free account is ... FREE!
Q. What are the premium accounts for?
A. The premium accounts are available for members who need more space to upload their own videos.
Q. I have added videos to my free account but this is due to expire in 365 days ... what happens then? Will I lose my content?
A. The free accounts are available for 1 year - after which time we will either extend them or set a fee depending on whether the site is covering it's costs. We will notify all members prior to this time to inform you of what will happen. If an account expires it will mean that your videos will be removed. We advise all members to keep a copy of their content on their computer hard drive or other media in case of loss.

Q. How Do I sign up for an account?

A. To login click the Log In link located in the top right hand corner of the page above the search box. In the next screen enter your user name and password into the box provided then click the Log In button. You can also tick the 'remember' box which will tell your browser to remember your login details for the next time you want to login! (Note: this places a cookie on your computer hard drive.
Q. How do I edit my profile?
A. To edit your profile, login then in the user control panel click 'Edit Profile'. In the next screen you can edit your email address, change your password and enter information that you would like to be displayed publically like your personal website url, about me, birthday, gender, relationship status and other details.
Q. How do I change my profile image?
To upload a profile image, login then in the user control panel click 'Upload Photo'. In the next screen, click the Browse button to open up a window that allows you to browse the pictures on your hard drive. Select the one you want to use in .jpg format only then click Upload Photo. You may need to refresh the page after uploading to see the new image.
Q. I have a free account. How do I Upgrade my membership account package?
A. To upgrade your membership package, login then in your user control panel, click Upgrade Package then select the package you would like and click the Next button. In the next screen, review the package details and select the payment method (currently PayPal only) and click the Next button. In this screen, enter your name, city and country then click Next button. You will be re-directed to PayPal to complete your payment. As soon as payment has been processed you may return to VocalistOnline to login. The increased space / video allowance will appear in your profile.
Q. How do I watch videos on this site?
A. To watch a video, click on the thumbnail image on the front page, or click 'Watch' in the navigation menu and then click the video you want to view. (May require login).
Q. Is there a way to view the most recently added videos? or most viewed? most discussed? top favourites?
A. There is indeed a way to view all these options and more! Click 'Watch' in the top navigation menu and in the next screen a 'sub-menu' will appear beneath it - this contains links to the Most Recent, Most Viewed, Most Discussed, Top Favorites, Top Rated, Featured or a Random selection of videos - click on one to view the selection.
Search for Videos
Q. How do I find videos using the search feature?
A. To search for a video by title, group or submitter, enter one or more keywords into the search box (i.e., larynx) then select 'Search Videos' or 'Search Users' or 'Search Groups'. In the event that no results are returned, try reducing the number of keywords used or change the keyword. An alternative option is to click on the 'Tags' link in the top navigation bar which will display a list of popularly used keywords. Click on these to display a list of videos using that keyword in their tag list.
Q. How do I organise videos that I watch?
A. Videos that you watch can be added to your playlist - all videos with tags are automatically organised into catagories using that keyword. You can also organise videos by using the Groups feature, either by adding or submitting the video to an existing group when uploading or by creating your own group.
Q. How do I tell my friends / family about my videos?
A. You can Invite other members to To invite friends, click on Friends link on top menu. On friends page, click Invite More link in sub menu.
Q. Can I review or comment on videos?
A. You may add a review or comment on a video by using the comment box displayed under the video share detail section. (Login may be required to post comments).
Q. How do I upload a video from my computer?
A. To upload a video from your computer, login then click 'Upload' link in the top navigation menu. In the next screen enter a short but descriptive title, add a longer description to tell your viewers something about the video content and add some tags to help people find your video. Choose a channel for the video to be placed in (IMPORTANT - Please ensure that you select a relevent channel for your video by reviewing the options on the CHANNEL page BEFORE uploading your video). Next step is to choose who you would like to see your videos by selecting 'Public' or 'Private'. Then select the 'Your PC' option and click UPLOAD. In the next screen, click the 'Browse' button to browse your computer hard drive and select the one you want then click UPLOAD. This can take several minutes depending on the size of the video. Please be patient as the uploading and conversion process takes awhile on large files and sometimes appears nothing is happening - do not close your browser window or navigate away from the page or the upload will fail - once the upload has completed, you will see a success message and link to your video. Video clips must be no larger than 30MB in size or they will fail to upload.
Please note that when you upload from your computer the video will get converted to FLV format for viewing in flash player. This is done by mencoder/ffmpeg.
Q. How do I upload a video from YouTube, Revver, Metacafe or other video site that allows users to embed code to display videos on external websites?
A. Follow the upload steps for uploading a video from your computer but select 'Remote Server' and in the next screen enter the url of the video you wish to use i.e.,
Q. Can I make my videos private so that only people I know can view them?
A. Yes, you may choose to make your videos private during the upload process. Select 'Private'.
Q. How do I edit my video title, description and permissions?
A. Login and go to the video you wish to edit. Underneath the video click the 'Edit' link and use the form provided to make the desired changes, then click the submit button. You may only edit your own videos, not those added by any other user.
Q. How do you promote my videos?
A. We promote VocalistOnline.com to bring visitors to the site which has several promotional features. Recently added videos appear in their own section, as do the Most Viewed, Most Discussed, Top Favorites, Top Rated and Featured videos. The videos can also be viewed randomly by clicking the Random link.
Q. How do I promote my videos?
A. To promote your videos, you can request them to be Featured by clicking the 'Feature This!' link under the video player. We will review all requests and if we feel that your video deserves to be featured, we will add it to the list. You can also share your videos with friends and family members when logged into your account by inviting them to join VocalistOnline. If they accept your invitation by clicking on the link in the email an registering to the site, they will be automatically added to your friends list. You may also add existing members who contact you via the site messaging system by clicking on the 'Add as Friend' link in your user profile, then tick the box next to the users name and use 'Select Action' to choose whether to add them as a friend or as a family member. You can also create new contact groups to add people to to seperate them from your friends and family lists.
Q. How do I report a video as inappropriate?
A. We manually review all content added to the site but in the unlikely event that you consider a video you are watching contains inappropriate content, click the Inappropriate link under the video and we will review it again. All reports of this nature are considered on an individual basis and any that we feel are not suitable for viewing by our members will be removed. Note that due to the educational nature of this site, content showing anatomical diagrams and photographs of the vocal anatomy are considered acceptable, however, we do NOT allow content of an adult or sexual nature including nudity.
Q. What are Channels?
A. Channels are essentially catagories and work in a similar way to your TV channel. If you view the list you will see that they contain information on the type of videos that are included in that channel, for instance: Events > Auditions, Competitions, Concerts, Masterclasses, Tours, Workshops - these are all events.
Q. Can videos be added to more than one Channel?
A. Yes! If a video is suitable for more than one channel you may add it to up to 4, however, we may adjust this if after review, it fails to fall into all the channel descriptions you have selected, so please choose carefully! For instance, a singing Masterclass or Workshop can also be included in both the EVENT channel and the HOW TO SING channel.
Q. Can I create my own Channel?
No. It is not possible for members to create their own channel.
Q. How do I catagorise my videos and create groups?
A. To catagorise your videos, add them to one of the groups provided by VOAdmin or create your own group. To create a group, click "GROUPS" in main menu. On next page click "Create Group" link in sub menu. Enter a title, add tags and a description for the group, choose a url and channel, select the permissions for the group and then click 'Submit' button to save.
Q. I tried to create a group but it didn't work!
A. In most cases this is because you attempted to create a group using a title that has already been taken, i.e., Masterclasses. Please check the group listings to ensure one with the name you want is available. Ideally try to choose something relevent to the videos you want to add to the group but do not use the same title as one of the existing groups. Unless you wish your videos to be private, it is better to add your videos to an existing group if it is available!
Q. How do I change my personal settings?
A. To change your personal settings, login to go to your profile page, then click 'Edit Profile'. In this section you may change your email address, update your password, edit your birthday, gender, relationship status, location information, about me details and other personal details that you would like to be displayed in your profile.
Q. How do I customise my profile page?
A. You can change the colour scheme of your profile page by logging in then click 'Edit Profile' and scroll down to the end of the form where you will find a drop down box marked 'Profile Style' - select the colour scheme you would like to use then click Update Profile button to save.
Q. How do I interact with other members?
A. You may interact with other members by browsing the site and finding a video or members page where you can then use the add comments form or send message form to contact them. You may also add members as a friend by using the 'Add as Friend' feature or use the 'Share' button to share your profile link with your friends and fans on other networks like myspace, bebo, facebook, twitter or send it to them via email using your email client.
Q. What are subscriptions and how do they work?
A. There are two types of subscriptions. The first type are when you subscribe to an RSS, Newsletter or other feed which then automatically informs you when the page or video or member is updated. The second type of subscription only applys to upgraded premium members who use PayPal - a paid subscription is advised that their membership is due for renewal and depending on the package, will automatically take payment when it is due.

A. To report bugs in the script or problems with the site, please use the contact email provided on the contact us page - include the page you were on and what you were doing before the bug/issue appeared and any other relevent details that will help us to resolve the problem.

Q. I have lost my password - how do I retrieve it?
A. To retrieve your password, click Log In located in the top right hand corner of the page above the search box then in the next screen click 'Forgot your password?' link located in the login box in between the password field and the login button or Click Here to go there now. Enter your username or the email address used when registering to the site and click Submit button. Your password will be sent to your inbox. If it fails to appear, please check your junk folder and ensure that vocalistonline.com domain is in your email whitelist.
Q. How do I change my password?
A. To change your password, click Log In located in the top right hand corner of the page above the search box then in the next screen click 'Edit Profile?' In the next page there are three fields, one where you must enter your current password and two fields where you may enter the new password you wish to use. Once you have entered this information, scroll to the end of the form and click Update Profile button to save.
Q. I am unable to login to my account and my personal page has disappeared - why?
Q. An error message appeared when I was trying to view/do something on this site - what does it mean?
A. There are several standard error messages that will appear if a visitor or member tries to do something that is not allowed or has been attempted incorrectly. This includes failing to enter a password when logging in to attempting to upload a file that is not allowed or of the wrong type or size. Each error message is specific to the action or failure to complete a required action and includes details on what you have to do to resolve the issue i.e., incorrect password, please enter the correct password.
Q. I am unable to upload my video or profile picture!
A. Please check that the file type and size are correct - the system will not allow users to upload a file of the wrong type or files that are too large. For instance, profile images can only be in jpg format - attempting to upload a gif, png or tiff will fail.
Q. I uploaded a video successfully but now it has disappeared and seems to have been deleted - why?
A. All content is manually reviewed by our staff, if we are unable to view the video (i.e., the url returns as video not found) it will be removed. If after review the video is deemed to be inappropriate or is suspected to be copyrighted by someone else will be automatically deleted without notification. This includes songs, videos of popular artists so please do not upload this type of material!
Video Player Problems
Q. I am unable to play videos on this site!
A. The video player has been tested on Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera - most issues occur because the users browser is out of date or requires the latest flash player update from Adobe. Update these, restart your browser and then try using the player again. If this fails please contact us with details of the browser and flash player version details.

Q. Who owns the copyright to this site and the materials I upload?
A. VocalistOnline.com owns the copyright to the site design, logos, images and content that we upload unless stated otherwise. Members retain all copyright to their ORIGINAL materials and by registering to the site provide us with a non-exclusive, royalty free right to display them on our site. We do not allow uploading of material which is copyright protected i.e., videos, images or content that you have not created yourself or which is not in the public domain. The latter ONLY applies to material that is over 50 years old and is proven to be out of copyright or which has been released into public domain by the copyright owner. It does NOT include material from living artists whose material is freely available on the internet which may have been ripped or provided illegally for anothers use, or that which has been purchased for individual use from places like iTunes/Amazon etc.
