American contralto Janet Spencer / O don fatale / Don Carlos (Verdi) / Recorded: March 8, 1911 -- ITEM: (PHOTOGRAPH) The first, second, and final images of Spencer are from the Sunday, March 25, 1906 edition of The New York Times, prominently sharing pride of place at the top of a page headlined 'Music and Music Makers', with the portraits of noted tenor Alessandro Bonci and violinist Franz Kneisel. The portrait used in the third and fourth sequence are surely from the same studio session as image featured in the NYT. Janet Spencer had a successful career in concert and oratorio. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she made her debut at the age of 16, appearing with the Boston Festival Orchestra. She later toured throughout the United States and Europe. She was an intimate friend of Geraldine Farrar, encouraging the younger star in her Met career. In Spencer's later years she gave voice lessons in Hollywood, California, where she died in 1948 at the age of 74. She made nine recordings on Victor's prestigious Red Seal label. ****************************
This is the acetate demo recorded by Patrice Munsel with composer Marc Blitzstein on the piano of the remarkable coloratura aria "Song of the Arrow" from his lost-in-Boston Broadway-intended musical "Reuben Reuben". Cast included Eddie Albert, Kaye Ballard, George Gaines, and Evelyn Lear who was completely unknown just out of Juilliard when Blitzstein cast her, much as he cast Carol Channing, Vivian Vance, Shirley Booth, and discovered Leonard Bernstein as a junior at Harvard before her. Lear sang this in the show. This recording is cleaned of very heavy noise, and is part of my collection of recordings comprising a demo of the full score, which is extraordinary and which should be completely and newly recorded (see Dawn Upshaw's "I Wish It So" CD for another song from it). Besides "Blitzstein Strikes Back" (a biographical musical drama) I also wrote a scenario for "Reuben", as MB never revised the book he also wrote; the problems with it considered the reason Cheryl Crawford closed it in Boston. As is, an amazing mix of opera, comedy vaudeville, bar ditties and ballads. A great lost score, and almost unknown in part because so much of it only exists in nearly unlistenable sound (until now). As is typical of MB's work, this beautiful aria is about Nina standing on the Manhattan Bridge and spitting loogies ('arrows') at passers-by. As Anna Russell used to say, "I'm not making this up you know." Each character sings in his or her own genre, including a passing street quartet.

7 May 2005 at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City, Ace Yodeler Randy Erwin entertains a crowd of yodeling enthusiats. This event was created and hosted by Bart Plantenga, author of the 2004 best-seller, "Yodel-Ay-Eee-Ooo, The Secret History of Yodeling Around the World" who was finishing up another book lecture tour on yodeling. Yodelers Lynn Book and Mike Johnson also performed that night. After the show, Randy and Mike got a little confused trying to navigate the New York City subway system back to their transportation. Randy is an extremely versatile yodeler, who also took lessons as a youngster from Janet McBride, The Yodeling Queen. He has performed around the world and has several releases out and is a down-right friendly person. Randy is also the yodeler behind the character Alameda Slim in Walt Disney's animated feature film, HOME ON THE RANGE. Bart Plantenga is working on a follow-up book, entitled "Yodel In Hi-Fi" and has several more yodeling CDs in the works as a follow-up to his 2004 compilation "The Rough Guide To Yodel" featuring 18 world famous Yodelers, including Mike Johnson and Janet McBride. The biggest draw to Linda's Coffee House Open Mic is the enthusiastic interaction between the musicians and the patrons. After finishing his kick-off set, Mike is reminded by John that there are newcomers who haven't received the customary Coffee House Yodel Lesson. Sadly, we lost John to cancer earlier this year, and his wife Carol, sitting beside him is coming to terms with it. Rollin' Ralph is on the banjo, and Dave Brunor is on the guitar in the foreground and there are a number of other talented musicians out to the camera range waiting for their slot. The late Rosalie Allen and Patsy Montana were America's reigning Yodeling Queens. Janet McBride's high-powered yodeling over the past five decades has left no doubt that she is indeed the Yodeling Queen. I met this fantastic person at the 1999 Avoca Festival. Both Janet and her husband, John Ingraham are also retired Deputy Sheriffs. Sonny Rodgers Yodelers Paradise Show at the August 2000 Avoca Old Time Country Music Festival. This 3-hour show was one of Avoca's most popular attractions featuring Yodelers from around the world. In spite of week-long temperatures relentlessly hovering between 97 and 100 degrees, the performers gave it their all and the fans endured. These excerpted clips represent some of the best performances. There are some audio glitches, of which I wasn't aware until I got home and watched the playbacks. Out of 10 film cassettes I shot, two of them suffered from this defect. This would also be Sonny Rodgers last Avoca attendance. His cancer reappeared and the Good Lord called him home in July 2001. 7 May 2005, Mike Johnson performs his most popular yodeling song at Bart Plantenga's yodel book lecture at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York, sharing the stage with Yodelers Randy Erwin and Lynn Book. Erwin is the yodeling voice in Disney's animated movie "HOME ON THE RANGE." Plantenga is a DJ, music historian and author of the 2004 best seller "Yodel-Ay-Eee-Ooo, The Secret History of Yodeling Around The World." This is Johnson's first official appearance following his November 2003 spinal cord injury when three of his neck vertebrae collapsed. His song "Yeah I'm A Cowboy" is on Plantenga's "Rough Guide To Yodel" CD along with the songs of 17 other world famous Yodelers. The CD was released in September 2006 by the World Music Network in London-UK, and is available from Amazon.com and numerous Internet sites. The video of this entire Bart Plantenga Yodel show is available from Roughshod Records. http://www.freewebs.com/blackyodelno1/roughshodrecordsstore.htm Bart Plantenga at http://www.bartplantenga.com Mike wrote the "T-Shirt Yodel" back in June 1988 in response to the many comments he was getting about his official T-Shirt which reads "Mike Johnson Black Yodel No.1, Country Music's No.1 Black Yodeler." Even after reading this someone would invariably ask him "Do you really yodel?" Johnson has written more yodeling songs than anyone, and his Yodel Song Archives, containing 114 yodeling songs written & composed by him, are in the Recorded Sound Reference Center's permanent music preservation collection at the Library of Congress. Mike Johnson is an inducted member of America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame. His "T-Shirt Yodel" song is available on Roughshod Records "Mike Johnson Yodeling 40 Years" CD a 2-disc set featuring 50 yodeling songs written and composed by him. Mike Johnson and 15-year old Mike Preston deliver a encore yodeling performance of Hank Williams' "Jambalaya" [which incidentally is not a yodeling song] at the June 1994 Michigan Jamboree in Hillsdale, Michigan. From age 12 to around age 17, Mike Preston was the hottest young yodeler in the New England states who had won virtually every award there was for his age group. And why not, considering his personal friend and mentor was Yodeling Slim Clark. Preston is currently in Nashville pursuing songwriting. This video was shot by singer, songwriter Johnny "J" of Sparta, Michigan. He shot the entire weekend of performances, and has the distinct honor of having the title of his song "Puckerbrush" being adopted and incorporated as the official name of their town, Puckerbrush, Nevada. Performing since the mid-1960s, Mike Johnson' Yodel Song Archives, containing 114 yodeling songs written & composed by him, are now part of the Library of Congress' Recorded Sound Reference Center's permanent music collection. This is after just four 20-30 minute voice lessons. The biggest difference in this video versus the others is in the neck area - look at all the tension in my neck in the earlier videos. So far, I've worked on relaxing and breathing correctly to release tension in my neck; focusing my voice and keeping my tongue forward, and dropping my larnyx. These are all things that should help the quality and resonance of my voice over time. We are also working on vocal agility. Eventually, we'll work on expanding my range and my ability to sing extended phrases. If you are interested in the Singers Advantage CDs, by all means get them just because they are fun to do and you get some useful vocal exercises. But if you want to see a significant change in the way you sing, voice lessons are the way to go. I am completely sold on them, in spite of their expense. (I did the Singer's Advantage workout for about three weeks last October, uploaded a couple of videos, and then misplaced the lesson CD. Then the holidays came along and YouTube/singing took a hiatus from my life. Two months ago, I decided to invest in biweekly guitar/voice lessons, and I've had 4 so far, and am logging my progress (hopefully) over time on YouTube :)

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from http://www.voaspecialenglish.com The Obama administration is launching a national competition called Race to the Top. States will compete for more than four billion dollars in grants to support the best plans for improving schools. President Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the details in July. The president said this competition will not be based on politics or ideology or the wishes of a particular interest group. Instead, it will be based on a simple principle: whether a state is ready to do what works. President Obama wants the United States to regain the world's highest college graduation rates, especially in math and science. His target date is two thousand twenty. But he says the education system is "falling short" and "countries that out-educate us today will out-compete us tomorrow." The United States is one of thirty countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The OECD has the Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA. Every three years PISA measures the performance of fifteen-year-olds. In two thousand six, the United States had lower scores in mathematics than twenty-three of the other twenty-nine OECD countries. Sixteen countries did better in science. The Race to the Top competition will look for states and local school systems with effective reforms in four areas. One area is meeting international standards for preparing students for college and jobs. Another is developing better ways to hire, keep and reward effective teachers and school leaders. A third area is building information systems that not only measure student success, but also inform teachers how to improve. President Obama supports linking teacher pay to student performance. Teachers unions have resisted that idea. States that want to take part in the Race to the Top cannot have rules that bar performance-based pay for teachers. That requirement could make it difficult for several states to receive money from the fund. Among them are California and New York. Finally, to win grants, states must show they are improving the lowest performing schools. The Education Department will award the first grants early next year. States will get two chances to win. Also, the department plans to award almost six billion dollars through other federal programs in the coming months to support reform efforts. And that's the VOA Special English Education Report.
