How the Body Works : The Organ of Corti

The Organ of Corti Situated in the spiral-shaped cochlea of the inner ear is the organ of Corti. Only one inch long if uncoiled, it bears about twenty-five thousand sound receptor cells with hairlike projections arranged in rows on the basilar membrane. The tips of the receptors are fixed in a gelatinous tectorial membrane. As the basilar membrane vibrates, the hairs press against the tectorial membrane and are stimulated. The membrane vibrates because the fluid waves created in the cochlea, initiate a traveling wave within it. Receptor cells in the membrane become stimulated at and around points of maximum amplitude that are determined by the sound frequency. The greater the amplitude of the wave, the louder the noise that is heard. Impulses are then generated in some of the thirty thousand nerve fibers which lead to the auditory cortex of the brain.

How the Body Works : The Auditory Pathways

The Auditory Pathways The auditory center, in the brain, shown above in red, is concerned with hearing. Although shown here on the outer surface of the brain, most of this area lies within the temporal lobes and is found within the surface of the cerebral cortex on both sides of the brain. The auditory pathways begin in the nerve fibers of the organ of Corti in the inner ear, where sound waves are converted to nerve impulses. These impulses travel in the auditory nerve to the auditory cortex of the brain. During their passage to the auditory center, some of the auditory nerve fibers cross in the brain stem. This results in the sound which enters one ear passing to both cortices. The impulses are relayed in the lateral lemnisci and from there, via the medial geniculate nuclei, to the auditory cortices in the temporal lobes of the brain, where sound is perceived.

Ronnie Drew The Last Session: A Fond Farewell on RTE News at 9

Buy it on: http://www.celticcollections.com RTE News coverage of the launch for Ronnie Drew's last album, The Last Session: A Fond Farewell at O'Donoghue's Pub in Dublin, Ireland. The collection on this album is no more, nor no less, than Ronnie Drews musical epitaph, the music he wanted the public to hear after a lifetime of playing and recording in the world-renowned style of the Dubliners and their associates. This album is different, the musicians backing Ronnie are jazz players, the duets are with some of our leading singers in a diversity of styles, and Hugh Buckleys inspired arrangements place Ronnie in a setting he has never had before. It is also something of great historical importance Ronnie Drews last record, made between November 2007 and May 2008, three months before he died of cancer. The choice of songs was Ronnies call. September Song, the great jazz song Nobody Knows, Shane McGowans A Rainy Night in Soho, Mike Hanrahans The Best of Times, The Auld Triangle, Loves Old Sweet Song, The Last Wave and Molly Malone. All the guest singers loved the project and were honoured to record with Ronnie. Damien Dempsey said Now, Ive finally made it. Ive recorded with Ronnie Drew. This was one of the very best days of my life. Emmanuel Lawler said afterwards. Mary Coughlan said It was a once in a lifetime thrill. Hugh Buckley recalled the unique atmosphere in the intimate studio during the sessions. We were all friends and there was a great vibe of mutual respect in the air. Each day in the studio was full of that wonderful feeling that something special was happening.

THE SINGERS WITH GREATEST LEGATO AND TIMBRE / COLORATION

Sadly most people do not consider these qualities when discussing a voice, instead focusing on range or power. Yet it is these two qualities that make a voice expressive and beautiful. The most powerful and versatile voice is nothing when lacking in legato and timbre, being totally displeasing to the ear. And yet limited voices become heart rendering when endowed with such gifts. Now, some may think me a fool for showcasing these two particular voices to make this point, being they are from such different genres. However, my years of studying great voices in the entire spectrum of music has led me to believe there are none better. I present legendary Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, and revered folk and spiritual bass singer, Paul Robeson. For those who would like a short musical lesson to know what I am talking about, continue reading:) For the already wise, simply listen and enjoy:) In music, timbre is the quality of a musical note or sound that distinguishes different types of sound production, such as voices or musical instruments. The physical characteristics of sound that mediate the perception of timbre include spectrum and envelope. Timbre is also known in psychoacoustics as sound quality or sound color. For example, timbre is what, with a little practice, people use to distinguish the saxophone from the trumpet in a jazz group, even if both instruments are playing notes at the same pitch and amplitude. Timbre has been called "a wastebasket category", or "the psychoacoustician's multidimensional wastebasket category" as it can denote many apparently unrelated aspects of a sound. In musical notation the Italian word legato (literally meaning "tied together") indicates that musical notes are played or sung smoothly. That is, in transitioning from note to note, there should be no intervening silence. Legato technique is required for slurred performance, but unlike slurring (as that term is interpreted for some instruments), legato does not forbid rearticulation. In standard notation legato is indicated either with the word legato itself, or by a curved line over or under the notes that are to be joined in one legato group. Legato, like staccato, is a kind of articulation. There is an intermediate articulation called either mezzo staccato or non-legato.

Inva Mula - The Diva Dance (PLEASE, READ THE DESCRIPTION)

Inva Mula - The Diva Dance (The Fifth Element) 'Her vocalizations may seem beyond physical possibility, but it was stated in the movie's Special Edition documentary that her voice was not digitally altered (in "The Diva Dance" song however, at a point precisely 1 min. 06 secs., a distinct wind instrument can be heard overdubbing her voice).' Check out these videos: 1. Charles Kellogg (he had the widest vocal range ever (12 1/2 octaves) and he used his throat to produce those sounds, not whistle register. It's TRUE!!!! 'Morning Edition, November 26, 2003 •Charles Kellogg (1868-1949) could sing like a bird. Literally. At least that's the story, and the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center is sticking to it. Kellogg would stand in front of an audience, open his mouth, and out would come an aviary of birdcalls. He claimed to have the larynx of a bird (called a syrinx). NPR's Ketzel Levine tells Kellogg's story as the first part of her series, Big Trees and the Lives They've Changed. Kellogg maintained that physicists measured his voice with a tuning fork, and discovered it could vibrate up to 40,000 cycles per second. Compare that with the upper range of the human voice -- around 500 cycles per second -- and you get some idea of just how high the pitch of his voice might have been. If true, Kellogg would have been capable of producing sounds inaudible to the human ear! Though a consummate performer -- he traveled at home and abroad doing vaudeville-style tricks with his voice -- Kellogg had a mission. He was a humanitarian and a naturalist who wanted, he wrote, "To awaken interest in the great redwood forests of California, and to assist in their preservation." His lasting legacy is The Travel Log, the world's first mobile home, hand-hewn from a chunk of fallen redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), and mounted on the back of a 1917 Nash Quad truck. From 1917-1921, Kellogg took his Travel Log on the road. He drove it across the country four times, coast-to-coast, bringing word of the redwoods to people who had never heard, let alone imagined, there could be such trees. He spoke of the accelerated logging taking place in the redwood forests, made impassionate pleas for the trees' preservation, and spread the word about a fledgling organization looking for members. It was called the Save The Redwoods League.' 'His human voice was analyzed and found to be normal, under 4,000 Hz; however, his bird voice soared into the inaudible, above 14,000 Hz. In August of 1926, he did a "voice flame" demonstration on KGO radio in Oakland, CA, where he astonished thousands by extinguishing a two-foot flame in Berkeley, CA, with nothing more than his voice over the airways. His voice reputedly had a range of twelve and one-half octaves, while the normal range of a singing voice is just two and one-half.'): *Songs Of Our Native Birds - No. 1* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2kgHAhRyD0 *Songs Of Our Native Birds - No. 2* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yQZSxvHzQ0 *How Birds Sing* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80qtP4o7rjs *The Bird Chorus* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cizafxW_mhw 2. HcoreSouljah's How to do: Scream/deep screams/pig squeals! (using screaming technique, No growls)

Just learnt this technique today, by trial and error :P A very short explenation of how to do Gutturals Deep SCREAMS and (trying to do) pig squeals, basically only using vocal fry method... It's basically just a guttural scream now. Since I can't 'bree' it correctly yet. But it's low and sounds quite brutal. Guttural GROWLS however, sound even way more brutal. Couldn't do them untill a few months after this vid... I'll make a vid about them real gutturals too if I get the chance. EDIT: THESE ARE SCREAMS!! For 'real' gutturals and pig squeels you'll need to GROWL and not SCREAM. When I get my cam back I'll show you guys the difference!

This collaborates with my other video entitled "Tongue Trills And Lip Trills At The Same Time" I mixed two pictures that I found on google together. Once you get used to doing this with the video, I suggest doing it without the help from the sound of this video... from as low as you can go, to as high as you can go, back down to as low you can go.

Afton Place music video by Paul Collins Beat

New official music video for the new song Will You Be A Woman by Paul Collins' Beat. From the new full length CD album "Flying High." Video by Kike Narcea. Rock icon and cult favorite Paul Collins founded legendary rock band The Nerves with Grammy award-winner Peter Case and Jack Lee in 1974. The Nerves funded their own recordings, toured with The Ramones and released a song called Hanging On The Telephone, a hit song which has been covered by Cat Power, Def Leppard and Blondie, on the Parallel Lines album. After The Nerves disbanded in 1977, Paul Collins formed The Beat, recruiting members of various rock bands. The Beat were music video pioneers, with videos appearing on early MTV and touring the world, performing with major rock acts such as The Cure, The Police, The Jam, Devo and countless others. Today, Paul Collins’ Beat continues to play hundreds of concerts each year, touring USA, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Italy, Spain, Sweden, France, UK and throughout Europe.
