Stevie Nicks' Vocal Range [F#2-E5]

Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac has a recorded vocal range of F#2-E5, two octaves and a minor seventh. She is a contralto but didn't concentrate on her lower register much until her voice started to decline rangewise around the early 90's. She has a very low speaking voice usually around B2-C3, which sometimes drops to some very low baritone notes. Her absolute highest is a G#6 in a laugh from a video here on YouTube! Lower Register #1: A3s from Freedom, a Fleetwood Mac song from Behind The Mask. #2: G#3s from solo song Ooh My Love. #3: G3s from Fleetwood Mac song Sara. #4: F#3s from Violet and Blue. #5: Strong F3s from one of my favourite Mac songs, Gypsy. #6: Time to get low! Very strong E3s from solo song Trouble In Shangri-La... #7: Eb3 from the song Street Angel. #8: A low line from Every Day, with a short B2 ending on a strong C#3. #9: A B2 from Goodbye Baby, on the latest Fleetwood Mac album Say You Will. #10: This low harmony buried right at the end of Destiny Rules, also from Say You Will, ends on Bb2! Higher Register #1: A strong G4 ending on an A4 from Beauty and the Beast. Lovely song! #2: G#4 from Sheryl Crow duet, If You Ever Did Believe, from the Practical Magic soundtrack. #3: A nice sustained A4 from Fall From Grace, on the Trouble In Shangri-la album. #4: Great Bb4 from Stevie's version of the Blues standard At Last. #5: Fantastic B4 from Buckingham/Nicks song Frozen Love! #6: I had to include this one, a head voice C5 from you-know-what! #7: Lovely full-sounding C5s from Rhiannon. #8: A C#5 from Seven Wonders. #9: Nice D5 from Nothing Ever Changes! #10: Stevie's highest full voice note, a glissando up to Eb5 from Wild Heart! #11: An E5 from Sisters of the Moon, but I think this is Christine McVie. At 9:05 of this video watch?v=SNgXVmxj52A there is a short Stevie E5. Stevie speaks her way down to Gb2 in full voice in this interview, and down to D2 with vocal fry watch?v=g3M21qrlFxI

Fat Tony's beatbox tutorials - Abra / crab scratch (guest hosted by LuckeyMonkey)

I don't like the Abra scratch but it seemed that every other message I received was requesting a tutorial for one. I really don't like the scratch at all. I don't like how it sounds, I don't like that everybody thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, I don't like anything about it. I didn't want to do an Abra scratch tutorial. So I didn't. This is my girlfriend, the incredibly talented LuckeyMonkey. It's her first beatbox tutorial as well, and I may well ask her to do some more in the future. Check her out at http://www.youtube.com/luckeymonkey - subscribe, check her videos, etc. The Abra scratch is also commonly called the crab scratch, finger scratch, and transformation scratch. To make the sound: 1 - Make a kissy face 2 - Put your finger against your lip (or, indeed, any part of your hand / arm / foot) 3 - Inhale whilst breathing words like "too" or "tooka" 4 - Use uvular oscillation and clickrolls to add rolls to the scratch 5 - Put into a beat 6 - Note that there are a massive variety of ways you can do this sound. The finger and thumb method described is the most common when it comes to putting the sound into a beat because it's possible to do it whilst holdinga microphone. Hope you enjoy the video, more guest videos may well come in the future. Updated on a tentative weekly schedule (I say tentative because let's face it, stuff goes wrong - I get ill, or my camera explodes, or my laptop transforms and leaves me) this series will teach you the ins and outs of beatboxing, as well as some ups and downs and even a few lefts and rights. Please feel free to hit the subscribe button, or leave a comment mentioning my awesomeness. If you would like help with the sounds or feedback on your beats, post a video response showing the sound as you are doing it, and I will be happy to give feedback. Become a fan on Facebook for regular updates - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Fat-Tony/118561857365 Follow me on Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/fattonybbx If you have any questions you'd like answered, email me: Fat_Tony@HUMANBEATBOX.COM Peace, love, and guest stars -FT

#7 bass notes: the double low G down to C

1.Paul Harkey from the Anchormen with some nice Ab1:s, song is "After awhile". 2.Finally I found some low Barry White! It shouldn´t be so hard though..here he talks/sings around G1/A1 and then sustains a G1 (BELIEVE) moves up to A1 and tries for a whispery D1! The song is Dark and loveley and is a nice duet between Barry and Isaac Hayes (who hits a few D2:s). 3.David lee Roth talksinging his way down to G1, song is Tight. 4.Eric Bennet with a passage sung around G1, song is "Just a little talk with Jesus". This clip was featured in the bass video of biglhot75. 5.Eric again, this time with a powerful G1, song is "When the Lord saved me". Also from the biglhot75 video. 6.Tim Riley hits a looooong G1 in the famous 4 octave spread ending together with Jay Parrack. A live version of When he comes I´ll fly away. 7.Same song and note but from this year! 8.JD Sumner with a nice sustained G1 from song One by one. 9.Aaron McCune with two nice G1:s from the biglhot75 video, song is "By Your grace, for Your glory" and "for the sake of my heart". 10.Allen Brantley from Accapella hits a close mike F#1 in the middle of the clip, I´m a bit unsure of the pitch though. 11.Barry again, this time with his lowest note ever, three F#1:s from song Low rider. 12.Cecil Stringer (left in picture) with a nice F1, from the same song (Beautiful Life) that I featured in my 5th video where Cecil bottomed out at a C1. 13.Tim with his lowest note ever! A F1 from song I´m saved. 14.JD Sumner with a low sung passage bottoming at a F1, song is Wayfaring Stranger. 15.Aaron McCune with his lowest note ever, an E1. Song is That old Alter live in 2003. 16.George Younce with a smoking E1. Song is "The love of the Lord", clip is from biglhot75´s bass video. 17.Eric Bennet with a strong E1 (this guy can do a C1!), song is "Terrible time down there", clip is from biglhot75´s bass video. 18.Paul Harkey with an Eb1 from Working on a building. Does he do it as good as Sterban? Almost. 19.Paul Kennamer (right in picture) with a good Eb1 from Lay it down, live version. 20.JD again, this time with the final part of One by One, very nice song. He sings G1 on KEEP your heart and on the last SKY. D1 on HEART, a shame that he hesitates though. Possibly even lower on the word draws NIGH in the middle. 21.JD with a live version of Way down with an Elvis imitator. I don´t think he nails the C1, rather a D1. 22.In the studio version he does not land on the C1 but rather slides in a whispery way down from Eb1 to B0/C1. 23.Another live version, this time I think he nails the double low C! 24.Youtuber Casey Moo with a C2 and a C1. I´m not totally convinced that it is non-fry. It sounds too easy and alas weak, but I could be wrong. Coming up next, the subcontra octave basses

Dr Anthea Anand Co-Founder Gurukul sings Raag Bhupali

http://www.gurukul.org/index.php Dr Anthea has absorbed Indian Culture at its highest: not in Sari's and samosas, but in Yoga and Classical Singing and Ayurveda. This rag appears to be very ancient. It is based upon a pentatonic structure that is found in many parts of the world. It is believed by many scholars that the pentatonic scales; of which Bhupali is one, were prevalent in the middle and far-East by the first millennium B.C. This scale has been in China for many centuries; it is also found in the folk music of northern Britain. Yet, it is not clear whether the scale developed independently or spread through cultural interchange. Either way, it has been around for a long time and is very popular. She co-founded Gurukul in Newcastle upon Tyne. www.Gurukul.Org has been set up in the UK to teach Hindustani Music. Singing is more natural than talking. Ravi Shanker, an eminent instrumentalist says: "In India the voice reigns as the supreme instrument of musical art. Uniquely flexible, expressive and personal, it is the model that the players of other instruments strive to emulate. It is to be found at the heart of India's vibrant classic genres, an instrument of the present, which, being steeped in tradition, maintains an unbroken continuity with the past. More than any other musical instrument, the voice exemplifies our common humanity and our cultural diversity." Having had the fortune of : 1. Being born in India and doing both Physics and Medicine 2. Being a GP for 30 years in the UK 3. Learning Vocal Indian Classical Music here for 15 years 4. Run Music and Arts for Health workshops here I the UK over 10 years I know the value of singing. I have measured its effect on Brain Waves by EEG. Traditionally ICM is taught one-to--one by the Guru (teacher) through a process which is like bringing up a child. It is a holistic experience based on trust. Each child is taught according to his/her own nature in a way which opens up their creative and musical potential along with both personal and spiritual development. We believe that music is for everyone and that the human voice is our most powerful instrument for expression. Adapting to the group learning situation which is very different from the stress-free environment in one-to-one teaching. We took groups of around 30 children from different primary schools. A workshop begins by showing respect to the Guru and his music through the greeting "Namaste Guruji'' with the children sitting cross-legged on the floor in the traditional manner as close to their teachers as possible so they feel part of the Gurukul (or teacher's family) The method of learning is by listening and copying. Just as a young child learns to listen, observe and copy his parents so these children are asked to listen to and copy the names and sounds of the notes. Like the children themselves each note has a name: SA RE GA MA PA DHA NI SA Do Re Mi Fa SO La Ti Do Indian music is based on raags -- sequences of notes which convey different moods and feelings. Initially the children are taught these notes in Raag Bilawel which is similar to our major scale. They can be sung in various combinations eg SAG RE REMAGA GAPAMA MADHAPA PANIDHA DHASANI NIRESA SADHANI NIPADHA DHAMAPA PAGAMA MAREGA GASARE RENISA The equivalent of these notes in the scale of C Major is CED DFE EGF FAG GBA ACB BDC CAB BGA AFG GEF FDE ECD DBC We explore the effects that different raags create. This was very evident in a school for severely mentally and physically handicapped children where they were all happy singing notes from Raag Bilawel, a late morning raag. When the notes changed to Raag Bhairav, a sombre early morning raag, their faces fell and they looked away and fidgeted. There was great relief with the return of Bilawel. These children also responded well to rhythm, some being able to partake better this way than by using their voice. They really enjoyed the opportunity to actually play the instruments. The Indian system of music has tremendous potential as an educational experience in both musical and life skills because of the nature of the music itself and the way in which it is taught. Relating to the natural cycles and rhythms of nature it is deeply healing and meditative in character. It is particularly relevant in today's stressful, materialistic way of living. Anyone can learn. Previous musical experience is not essential and age is no barrier. All the student needs is a desire to learn, an enjoyment of the music, and a willingness to practice. Dr Anand anandjee

Lindsey Buckingham's Vocal Range Part 1 (D2-B5)

A shorter video this time, for Lindsey Buckingham also of Fleetwood Mac. His range in full voice is approximately F2-D5, extending down to D2 and up to B5. An amazing singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Lindsey sings tenor high notes very comfortably. Second octave notes are rare but he does sing them at times, mostly to contrast with Christine McVie. He tends to harmonise with Stevie Nicks. He is also fond of studio trickery, as heard on Big Love and Family Man, so I'm a bit unsure of some of these notes! 1. C#3s from Fleetwood Mac song Never Going Back Again. 2. The chorus to Fleetwood Mac's Isn't It Midnight, lines sung on A2. Very near the bottom of his range. 3. Solo song Go Insane, there are E2s here. Studio trick or vocal fry! 4. D2 from Fleetwood Mac song Tusk. Vocal fry though! 5. Singing up to A4, classic chorus of Big Love. 6. Lindsey's nice backing vocal here also goes up to A4. 7. A B4 followed by a great 17-second A4 from Tango In The Night! I included the whole chorus. This song has never been performed live unfortunately. 8. Harmony going up to a strong B4. Song is of course, The Chain. 9. D5s from Tusk, sounds like falsetto. 10. Full D5 from Come, could be a studio trick... 11. He sings an A4 instead live. 12. Screechy falsetto A5s from The Chain Mirage tour video! 13. And finally, a quick glissando up to a falsetto B5 from Tusk Mirage tour video. Lindsey speaks down to F#2 here /watch?v=uIBX1SxULR8&feature=related

How to Overcome Laryngitis - Joni Wilson

http://www.OneMinuteU.com How to Overcome Laryngitis - Joni Wilson ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ hi, I'm Joni Wilson, and as a voice coach, I get calls all hours of the day and night from desperate people who have no voice left to deliver their message or sing their song. it's called laryngitis, and it comes in four varieties: infectious, contact, allergic, and the one I work with, mechanical. first three are treated by doctors and medication, the fourth is caused by misuse and voice abuse. it's easy to tell the difference. if your problem is voice abuse, all the medication and rest in the world isn't going to fix it. there's only one way to eliminate mechanical laryngitis, and that's by learning how to use your voice properly. so stop wasting your money on doctors and medication, invest in a good vocal coach and your voice will last a lifetime. oh, and if your voice is raspy, don't whisper. whispering chokes and damages your vocal chords. if you've got something to say, write it down. for further information, visit virtualvoicecoach.com. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Are you an Apprentice fan? 4 octave wonders Pt. 2 - David Lee Roth

Not the first singer you´d think of but in these 3 clips david shows some very very deep vocals without resorting to vocal fry and also some short high notes (no falsetto). Clip 1 from "me wise magic" shows Low A:s (A2) and some double-low A:s (A1) and a short F#5, 2nd clip shows several C#2:s and some short G1:s (the sheet music says F#1!) and lastly the 3rd clip shows a F#5 towards the end (from the solo song "slamdunk"). Let the debate begin! NEW Info: After doing many bass videos I am now more familiar with the concept of "vocal fry" and Dave is guilty of that technique for the deepest notes in clip 1 and 2, he often slides downwards at the end of a word and those end notes are fry (i.e. they are not emanating from the chest but only from the throat). The lowest he goes without fry is very hard to say. In clip 1 he goes down to at least G2 in chest voice and in the 2nd clip he starts it on a chest B1 and then hits many C#2:s in chest. The last phrase (FOR YOUR INNER EAR) is very low (around G#1/A1) and sounds pretty chesty but whispery. If Dave can do these notes live I´d be more convinced. New new info: in watch?v=QbXPHiyE7uE (just like a gigolo pre-talk) he goes down to G1 a couple of times and I don´t think it´s growl.

Vocal fry and Growling

By popular request I now try to discern between these two methods of achieving low notes WITHOUT using the normal full voice technique (that technique can be found in my bass videos). 1. Elvis Presley uses vocal fry at the end of this clip. The sound is produced from the throat only and hence it is weak by nature but a good microphone can of course amplify it so it can almost sound like a full voice note. The song is "Hurt" which features a splendid A4 by elvis but live he often took it up to B4. 2. Joe Brinkley from Promised Land Quartet goes down to Eb1 but that last note is a good example of vocal fry. The Ab1 before and after seems not to be fry though. from song "When I make it". 3. The vocalist growling in the 3rd clip is Henri Villberg from the Finnish band Rapture. The song is "Nameless". This technique uses the chest but the vocal chords have been too much pressurised (the sound is distorted) and this will cause coughing after a few seconds for the untrained growler. well trained growling does not seem to be damaging to the voice but I myself try to avoid using this technique too much. I´ve noticed that the chords adapt to this strain with time though. The picture is american wrestler "The Undertaker" whose apparition fits this singing style I think. 4. Eric Adams from Manowar singing in a less strained growling style. This adds grit and "warriorness" to the singing. Song is "Loki". Frying is all about SLOWERING the sound while normal chest voice is all about LOWERING the sound as low down in the chest as possible.

My Larynx - High Speed Video

This is a high-speed video capture of my larynx using the new Kay-Pentax high speed videolaryngoscopy system. It captures the images at 2000 frames per second, allowing you to see individual cycles of vocal fold vibration. The video captures the completion of one phonation (on an "EEEE" sound), followed by the onset of a second. You can see that air starts to come through the vocal cords before the vibration begins. This is what I do all day.

Vocal Coach Thomas Appell and Student David Tejadillas

David Tejadillas talks with vocal coach Thomas Appell about the advances he made after flying from Tokyo to train with Thomas. David first found out about Thomas by buying Thomas' book Can You Sing a HIGH C Without Straining? The book inspired him to give Thomas a call and come to California to train. Excerpt: "I saw your book, I ordered it, and I liked what I saw. I looked you up. I sent you an email and we arranged the lessons. I knew it was going to be good but this has blown away any expectations I had. This has just been so amazing. The first day I hit a tenor high C in full voice. Today (second day) I hit a soprano high C in falsetto which is really, really cool. If you're out there and you're thinking about whether you should come or not - you should come. You should come see Thomas." If you'd like to take private voice lessons with Thomas call 949-382-5911 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              949-382-5911      end_of_the_skype_highlighting or visit www.vocalinstruction.com. Spasmodic Dysphonia: A Peculiar Voice Disorder

Dr. Robert Bastian reviews the various types and subtypes of a rare neurological voice disorder called spasmodic dysphonia--SD. Numerous voice examples are included, along with video of the vocal folds. Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a rare neurological disorder caused by laryngeal dystonia, and it interferes with the smooth functioning of the voice. Tiny spasms of the vocal folds may cause the voice to catch or cut out, strain or squeeze away, and sometimes to drop momentarily to a whisper. Those watching this tape will hear examples of the many types of SD. http://www.bastianvoice.com
