This 7-minute video by Brandon Pletsch takes viewers on a step-by-step voyage through the inside of the ear, to the acoustic accompaniment of classical music. Pletsch, a former medical illustration student at the Medical College of Georgia, first built a physical ear model and mapped which frequency ranges hit which parts of the inner ear. He then created digital renderings of each part of the hearing pathway using several software packages. A narrator describes how the sound waves travel through each portion of the ear, and how hair cells translate the vibrations they induce into nerve impulses.

Human Ear Anatomy and Physiology: How an Ear Works
This 1940s old as dirt med school classic video describes how humans hear sound and how the human ear works. The video covers the anatomy and physiology of the ear and discusses the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Other topics include the eardrum (tympanic membrane), hammer (malleus), anvil (incus), stirrup (stapes), organ of corti, and the cochlea. Included in the video is a labeled diagram showing the parts of the human ear. This is excellent information for managers who have workers exposed to high levels of noise that could potentially damage hearing.

PATRICIA USES MYSPACE TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR RARE DISEASE
http://www.myspace.com/patriciamastoandeds BBNB PROUDLY SUPPORTS PATRICIA & HER SONG DUSTIN IN RAISING AWARENESS FOR THESE RARE CONDITIONS. Patricia, who has been nearly bed-ridden for three years and cut off from the rest of the world by a series of major heath issues, is using MySpace to raise awareness about two rare diseases. Patricia has two rare and often misdiagnosed diseases that don't allow her to work or drive. But she has managed to find a way to reach people in the outside world; the homebound woman is using the Internet to reach out and raise awareness about her diseases. Patricia has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a disease that breaks down collagen; she also suffers from Mast Cell Disease, which makes her have potentially fatal allergic reactions. As a result, Murray can't be around Latex, perfumes or even light. Her doctor agrees such cases are extremely frustrating. Dr. Opal Alpan said, "Current medicine doesn't have either answers or medications" for her situation. In fact, he says, there is no cure for her. But Patricia isn't giving up; she is fighting back with music. Murray invited artists to become friends on her MySpace page, where she posted information about her diseases. Murray says she has singers from Australia, Asia and Pakistan, and that they know about Mast Cell Disease and Ehlers Danlos because of her. Patricia is so adamant about raising awareness for the diseases that she held a contest online and awarded the winner $20,000 of her own money. Despite a life of chronic pain and endless medication, Patricia says she is happy about getting the word out with the help of singers in cyberspace. Patricia's son Dustin also has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which is genetic. He is hoping to to stage a concert in the D.C.-area this fall with some of her contest winners. Adapted from the TV interview.

How the Body Works : Breathing
Breathing The body's breathing apparatus is enclosed in an expansile bony cage, formed by the ribs, the spinal column and the sternum. The floor of the cage is closed by the muscular diaphragm. Air passes down the windpipe, or trachea, to enter the lungs. During inspiration, or inhaling, the diaphragm moves downward and becomes flatter, and the rib cage expands. This creates a partial vacuum in the lungs and, to equalize the pressure, air is drawn in. Expiration, or exhaling, is passive. The lungs have elastic tissue in their walls and during inspiration this is stretched. In expiration its natural recoil causes the lungs to partially deflate.

THE SINGERS WITH GREATEST LEGATO AND TIMBRE / COLORATION
Sadly most people do not consider these qualities when discussing a voice, instead focusing on range or power. Yet it is these two qualities that make a voice expressive and beautiful. The most powerful and versatile voice is nothing when lacking in legato and timbre, being totally displeasing to the ear. And yet limited voices become heart rendering when endowed with such gifts. Now, some may think me a fool for showcasing these two particular voices to make this point, being they are from such different genres. However, my years of studying great voices in the entire spectrum of music has led me to believe there are none better. I present legendary Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, and revered folk and spiritual bass singer, Paul Robeson. For those who would like a short musical lesson to know what I am talking about, continue reading:) For the already wise, simply listen and enjoy:) In music, timbre is the quality of a musical note or sound that distinguishes different types of sound production, such as voices or musical instruments. The physical characteristics of sound that mediate the perception of timbre include spectrum and envelope. Timbre is also known in psychoacoustics as sound quality or sound color. For example, timbre is what, with a little practice, people use to distinguish the saxophone from the trumpet in a jazz group, even if both instruments are playing notes at the same pitch and amplitude. Timbre has been called "a wastebasket category", or "the psychoacoustician's multidimensional wastebasket category" as it can denote many apparently unrelated aspects of a sound. In musical notation the Italian word legato (literally meaning "tied together") indicates that musical notes are played or sung smoothly. That is, in transitioning from note to note, there should be no intervening silence. Legato technique is required for slurred performance, but unlike slurring (as that term is interpreted for some instruments), legato does not forbid rearticulation. In standard notation legato is indicated either with the word legato itself, or by a curved line over or under the notes that are to be joined in one legato group. Legato, like staccato, is a kind of articulation. There is an intermediate articulation called either mezzo staccato or non-legato.

#7 bass notes: the double low G down to C
1.Paul Harkey from the Anchormen with some nice Ab1:s, song is "After awhile". 2.Finally I found some low Barry White! It shouldn´t be so hard though..here he talks/sings around G1/A1 and then sustains a G1 (BELIEVE) moves up to A1 and tries for a whispery D1! The song is Dark and loveley and is a nice duet between Barry and Isaac Hayes (who hits a few D2:s). 3.David lee Roth talksinging his way down to G1, song is Tight. 4.Eric Bennet with a passage sung around G1, song is "Just a little talk with Jesus". This clip was featured in the bass video of biglhot75. 5.Eric again, this time with a powerful G1, song is "When the Lord saved me". Also from the biglhot75 video. 6.Tim Riley hits a looooong G1 in the famous 4 octave spread ending together with Jay Parrack. A live version of When he comes I´ll fly away. 7.Same song and note but from this year! 8.JD Sumner with a nice sustained G1 from song One by one. 9.Aaron McCune with two nice G1:s from the biglhot75 video, song is "By Your grace, for Your glory" and "for the sake of my heart". 10.Allen Brantley from Accapella hits a close mike F#1 in the middle of the clip, I´m a bit unsure of the pitch though. 11.Barry again, this time with his lowest note ever, three F#1:s from song Low rider. 12.Cecil Stringer (left in picture) with a nice F1, from the same song (Beautiful Life) that I featured in my 5th video where Cecil bottomed out at a C1. 13.Tim with his lowest note ever! A F1 from song I´m saved. 14.JD Sumner with a low sung passage bottoming at a F1, song is Wayfaring Stranger. 15.Aaron McCune with his lowest note ever, an E1. Song is That old Alter live in 2003. 16.George Younce with a smoking E1. Song is "The love of the Lord", clip is from biglhot75´s bass video. 17.Eric Bennet with a strong E1 (this guy can do a C1!), song is "Terrible time down there", clip is from biglhot75´s bass video. 18.Paul Harkey with an Eb1 from Working on a building. Does he do it as good as Sterban? Almost. 19.Paul Kennamer (right in picture) with a good Eb1 from Lay it down, live version. 20.JD again, this time with the final part of One by One, very nice song. He sings G1 on KEEP your heart and on the last SKY. D1 on HEART, a shame that he hesitates though. Possibly even lower on the word draws NIGH in the middle. 21.JD with a live version of Way down with an Elvis imitator. I don´t think he nails the C1, rather a D1. 22.In the studio version he does not land on the C1 but rather slides in a whispery way down from Eb1 to B0/C1. 23.Another live version, this time I think he nails the double low C! 24.Youtuber Casey Moo with a C2 and a C1. I´m not totally convinced that it is non-fry. It sounds too easy and alas weak, but I could be wrong. Coming up next, the subcontra octave basses

Fat Tony's beatbox tutorials - Abra / crab scratch (guest hosted by LuckeyMonkey)
I don't like the Abra scratch but it seemed that every other message I received was requesting a tutorial for one. I really don't like the scratch at all. I don't like how it sounds, I don't like that everybody thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, I don't like anything about it. I didn't want to do an Abra scratch tutorial. So I didn't. This is my girlfriend, the incredibly talented LuckeyMonkey. It's her first beatbox tutorial as well, and I may well ask her to do some more in the future. Check her out at http://www.youtube.com/luckeymonkey - subscribe, check her videos, etc. The Abra scratch is also commonly called the crab scratch, finger scratch, and transformation scratch. To make the sound: 1 - Make a kissy face 2 - Put your finger against your lip (or, indeed, any part of your hand / arm / foot) 3 - Inhale whilst breathing words like "too" or "tooka" 4 - Use uvular oscillation and clickrolls to add rolls to the scratch 5 - Put into a beat 6 - Note that there are a massive variety of ways you can do this sound. The finger and thumb method described is the most common when it comes to putting the sound into a beat because it's possible to do it whilst holdinga microphone. Hope you enjoy the video, more guest videos may well come in the future. Updated on a tentative weekly schedule (I say tentative because let's face it, stuff goes wrong - I get ill, or my camera explodes, or my laptop transforms and leaves me) this series will teach you the ins and outs of beatboxing, as well as some ups and downs and even a few lefts and rights. Please feel free to hit the subscribe button, or leave a comment mentioning my awesomeness. If you would like help with the sounds or feedback on your beats, post a video response showing the sound as you are doing it, and I will be happy to give feedback. Here's a basic walk-through I put together explaining how to bring out the overtones. I ran by each step really quickly so if you have specific questions feel free to email me. Some things that I left out. -when making the "L" shape with your tongue, think of it as if you're pronouncing "ul" As you lift up the back it will naturally making an "ee" sound without you making it the "ee" shape with your lips. - the BIG challenge is going to be to hold the pitch you're singing in tune while listening for the pitch of the overtones. Don't worry about that at first. You will want to work on getting the overtones to really ring, THEN you can work on sustaining the pitch that you're singing in tune.

Please support the people who worked hard to make this series by paying your licence fee and buying it on DVD (If it is ever made). As this is not available elsewhere, this does not compromise the earnings of anyone. Choirmaster Gareth Malone has started two successful choirs, for adults and children, in the housing estate of South Oxhey, but he believes they won't become 'real' choirs until they can perform technically challenging classical music, and sing in Latin. So he arranges for both his choirs to sing at concert performances alongside highly accomplished musicians in front of demanding audiences. At first, many members in his choir feel it's impossible for a new choir, most of whom cannot even read music, to perform at this level. Some threaten to leave. Will Gareth be able to convince his singers that they can match his aspirations?

About Monitors for Broadway Auditions
Learn how to treat the monitor at a Broadway audition with expert performance tips in this free online Broadway related video clip. ATHENA REICH: In this clip, I'm going to talk about the monitor. The monitor is the person who sits outside the audition room and they're really the administrator for the audition. They--this is the person you come to in the morning to--and he--he or she gives you your time slot, he or she tells you it's time for you to line up, he or she actually will tell you--remind you in this audition their looking for a 16-bar cut of an up-tempo legitimate song. A lot of actors make the mistake of thinking this person is just the administrator and they can be rude to the monitor and between you and me, not all monitors are nice, beautiful, courteous angels. Sometimes they can be snippy, but you gotta really rise above and I'll tell you why. Because there have been many instances where an actor is a little bit snippy to a monitor and the monitor goes in the room and says, "The next person to audition is [PH] John Smith and he was a little snippy to me, just for your information." So, be careful, be courteous and always professional to the monitor. eHow Article: About Monitors for Broadway Auditions

7 May 2005 at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City, Ace Yodeler Randy Erwin entertains a crowd of yodeling enthusiats. This event was created and hosted by Bart Plantenga, author of the 2004 best-seller, "Yodel-Ay-Eee-Ooo, The Secret History of Yodeling Around the World" who was finishing up another book lecture tour on yodeling. Yodelers Lynn Book and Mike Johnson also performed that night. After the show, Randy and Mike got a little confused trying to navigate the New York City subway system back to their transportation. Randy is an extremely versatile yodeler, who also took lessons as a youngster from Janet McBride, The Yodeling Queen. He has performed around the world and has several releases out and is a down-right friendly person. Randy is also the yodeler behind the character Alameda Slim in Walt Disney's animated feature film, HOME ON THE RANGE. Bart Plantenga is working on a follow-up book, entitled "Yodel In Hi-Fi" and has several more yodeling CDs in the works as a follow-up to his 2004 compilation "The Rough Guide To Yodel" featuring 18 world famous Yodelers, including Mike Johnson and Janet McBride. Dr Anthea Anand Co-Founder Gurukul sings Raag Bhupali
http://www.gurukul.org/index.php Dr Anthea has absorbed Indian Culture at its highest: not in Sari's and samosas, but in Yoga and Classical Singing and Ayurveda. This rag appears to be very ancient. It is based upon a pentatonic structure that is found in many parts of the world. It is believed by many scholars that the pentatonic scales; of which Bhupali is one, were prevalent in the middle and far-East by the first millennium B.C. This scale has been in China for many centuries; it is also found in the folk music of northern Britain. Yet, it is not clear whether the scale developed independently or spread through cultural interchange. Either way, it has been around for a long time and is very popular. She co-founded Gurukul in Newcastle upon Tyne. www.Gurukul.Org has been set up in the UK to teach Hindustani Music. Singing is more natural than talking. Ravi Shanker, an eminent instrumentalist says: "In India the voice reigns as the supreme instrument of musical art. Uniquely flexible, expressive and personal, it is the model that the players of other instruments strive to emulate. It is to be found at the heart of India's vibrant classic genres, an instrument of the present, which, being steeped in tradition, maintains an unbroken continuity with the past. More than any other musical instrument, the voice exemplifies our common humanity and our cultural diversity." Having had the fortune of : 1. Being born in India and doing both Physics and Medicine 2. Being a GP for 30 years in the UK 3. Learning Vocal Indian Classical Music here for 15 years 4. Run Music and Arts for Health workshops here I the UK over 10 years I know the value of singing. I have measured its effect on Brain Waves by EEG. Traditionally ICM is taught one-to--one by the Guru (teacher) through a process which is like bringing up a child. It is a holistic experience based on trust. Each child is taught according to his/her own nature in a way which opens up their creative and musical potential along with both personal and spiritual development. We believe that music is for everyone and that the human voice is our most powerful instrument for expression. Adapting to the group learning situation which is very different from the stress-free environment in one-to-one teaching. We took groups of around 30 children from different primary schools. A workshop begins by showing respect to the Guru and his music through the greeting "Namaste Guruji'' with the children sitting cross-legged on the floor in the traditional manner as close to their teachers as possible so they feel part of the Gurukul (or teacher's family) The method of learning is by listening and copying. Just as a young child learns to listen, observe and copy his parents so these children are asked to listen to and copy the names and sounds of the notes. Like the children themselves each note has a name: SA RE GA MA PA DHA NI SA Do Re Mi Fa SO La Ti Do Indian music is based on raags -- sequences of notes which convey different moods and feelings. Initially the children are taught these notes in Raag Bilawel which is similar to our major scale. They can be sung in various combinations eg SAG RE REMAGA GAPAMA MADHAPA PANIDHA DHASANI NIRESA SADHANI NIPADHA DHAMAPA PAGAMA MAREGA GASARE RENISA The equivalent of these notes in the scale of C Major is CED DFE EGF FAG GBA ACB BDC CAB BGA AFG GEF FDE ECD DBC We explore the effects that different raags create. This was very evident in a school for severely mentally and physically handicapped children where they were all happy singing notes from Raag Bilawel, a late morning raag. When the notes changed to Raag Bhairav, a sombre early morning raag, their faces fell and they looked away and fidgeted. There was great relief with the return of Bilawel. These children also responded well to rhythm, some being able to partake better this way than by using their voice. They really enjoyed the opportunity to actually play the instruments. The Indian system of music has tremendous potential as an educational experience in both musical and life skills because of the nature of the music itself and the way in which it is taught. Relating to the natural cycles and rhythms of nature it is deeply healing and meditative in character. It is particularly relevant in today's stressful, materialistic way of living. Anyone can learn. Previous musical experience is not essential and age is no barrier. All the student needs is a desire to learn, an enjoyment of the music, and a willingness to practice. Dr Anand anandjee

Nina KOSHETZ - CHOPIN, Etude in E
"She sang with "a passionate Russian melancholy" and her voice was compared with a Stradivarius in the hands of a sensitive violinist... Nina Koshetz is a singer of an individual style." Nina Koshetz, Russian soprano, 1891 - 1965. Born in Kiev and hailed from a musical family. She gave her first piano recital at the age of nine. Graduating at 16, she had performed a Rachmaninov concerto for her final recital. She subsequently became interested in singing. It seems her real career began with a performance as Tatyana in Eugene Onegin with Zimin's Opera Company. Until 1917 she appeared there in operas such as The Queen of Spades, The Tsar's Bride, The Demon, The Enchanteress, Tosca, Nedda, Marguerite, Nedda and Aida. She not only sang opera but gave song recitals. In 1915 she met Sergei Rachmaninov and they appeared together in successful recitals, culminating in a romance. He dedicated to her a cycle of six love songs (op. 38). She eventually arrived in the United States . She made her official American debut as a soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Ossip Gabrilowitch in 1920 and was warmly received. She was now in demand for concerts and recitals by Stokowski, Koussevitzky, Rodzinski and Klemperer. Considered as one of her greatest achievements in the 1920s was the series of four Town Hall recitals celebrating for the most part Russian's greatest song writers. She became the authoritative voice for the Russian emigré composers. In 1924 she returned to Félia Litvinne, now living in Paris and Koshetz received further vocal tuition by the famous soprano. In 1927, commemorating her 15 years in music, she gave a recital devoted entirely to songs dedicated to her. The composer Gretchaninov renewed the collaboration with her and both were enthusiastically admired. Around 1934, she moved to California. By 1942 she opened an elegant music salon in Laguna Beach and taught singing to Marlene Dietrich, Ann Blyth and Claudette Colbert. Her daughter Marina made her successful debut at Town Hall in 1949. Nina Koshetz played some minor roles in films. Her unorthodox lifestyle caused a vocal decline in the late 1930s and ruined slowly but steadily her health. Nina Koshetz died in 1965. (www.cantabile-subito.de) I am pleased to introduce here this great singer, the voice of whom I just love for those "true Russian ingredients"; only a short moment of film has been presented by now. Her vocal rendition of Chopin's Etude in E is sublime.

How to be a Country Star - Statler Brothers
There's questions we're always hearing every where we go Like how do I cut a record or get on a country show Well, it takes more than just ambition and three chords on an old guitar There's a few more thing you ought to learn to be a country star. You have to learn to sing like Waylon or pick like Jerry Reed Yodel like Jeannie Shepard write songs like Tom T Put a cry in your voice like Haggard learn Spanish like Johnny R Whisper like Bill Anderson and you'll be a country star. Play piano like Ronnie Milsap or Gilley or Jerry Lee Yo-yo like Roy Acuff or talk plain like Ralph Emery Growl like Conway Twitty get a red white and blue guitar Build a swimming pool like Webb did and you'll be a country star. Be tall like Sonny James or tell jokes like Minnie Pearl Be short like Jimmy Dickens or play five-string like Earl Get a head band like Willie learn to stutter like a-Mel Get a cap like Roy Clark wore or a voice like Barbara Mandrell. Be rich like Eddy Arnold say you're making more than you are Get a gimmick like Charley Pride got and you'll be a country star. But if you have no talent and you're not a male If you're built somewhat like Dolly or have a face like Crystal Gayle Come back stage and ask for Harold, Phil, Don or Lew And we'll see you auditioned for the Statler Brothers Review...
